The Philippine media makes a fuss on almost EVERYTHING. They put the most unworthy news like a family feud or a couple fighting on national tv. In fact, during the Angelo Dela Cruz hostage taking in Iraq, they covered the anxious family on almost every imaginable angle. Every TV station showed news about his wife, his siblings, and his kids every day. They even go to the extent of covering their... guess what... their pets. Yes, people, that's how desperate they are. Whew! What a way to lose your privacy. But hey, they seem to enjoy it anyway.
This week, the hottest new thing is American Idol finalist Jasmine Trias. They followed her from the airport, through the MalacaƱang Palace were she met the President, through her every pictorials and photoshoots, and even through the streets of Cavite while she visited her relatives and tried to discover her roots. Fans poured in the streets and greeted her. Those who were unable to, looked for connections to the young singing sensation. They targeted her father who was accompanying her. In fact, her father has now a loyal following who kept asking for his autograph. She also became a target for advertising. Big businesses like SMART telecom, HERBENCH and McDonalds paid her to endorse their products. (In the McDonald's commercial of the "Jasmine Trio," she didn't seem to be into the product which she was endorsing.)
I actually pity her. Sure, she makes a lot of money but for the media to just jump on her like that... I wouldn't wanna be her.
For the media, they have so much power in their hands but they don't seem to understand the extent of their power. They are indeed what Dr. Ricky Abad (a Sociologist Professor in ADMU) says in a Marxist sense "an opiate to the masses." But all these things only prove one thing--that is a great need for media literacy in this country.
